Commercial Exterior Award
Coolum Beach Streetscaping Project – Carl Holder, product designer / urban artist
Jury comment
This intriguing public artwork at Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast expresses the natural qualities of the coastal environment. Timber gives form to the concept and is shaped in a way that highlights the natural grain of the material. The outcome is a bold piece of urban design that responds to day and night and the passing of time and seasons.
Commercial Interior Award
Captain Melville – Breathe Architecture
Jury comment
The reinvention of the Captain Melville hotel on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD deftly balances heritage sympathy and contemporary design. Timber elements sensitively stitch together old and new, melding architectural fabric and narrative. This is an innovative example of recycling that takes a fresh approach to the use of timber in a hospitality environment.
Commendation
George St Office Fit Out – Form Follows Function
Residential Exterior Award
House House – Andrew Maynard Architects
Jury comment
House House sits tall in the gritty urbanity of inner Melbourne. Timber expresses the form of the striking new vertical extension at the rear of two existing Victorian terraces. This timber box brings domestic warmth and vibrancy to the eclectic setting. The project successfully differentiates old and new, inside and out, and creates tailor-made spaces for contemporary living.
Commendation
Gordons Bay Residence – Madeleine Blanchfield Architects
Residential Interior Award
Shearer’s Quarters – John Wardle Architects
Jury comment
The Shearer’s Quarters at Waterview on North Bruny Island in Tasmania looks like it has always been there. Timber is an integral part of the narrative of the design, construction and inhabitation of this new building. The adaptive reuse of timber is strongly connected to the stories of this place and creates a canvas for new ones that speak of the historic and beautiful location.
