2014 Australian Interior Design Awards: Residential Decoration

Residential Decoration The Avenue by Arent&Pyke 2014 Australian Interior Design Awards

Jury comment

The Avenue is an exercise in the marriage of old and new. The home features clean, crisp interiors and a playful palette of colours and textures. Making the most of the clients’ collection of furniture and art, the designers have created interiors that reflect the personality of those that live here. The designers have also shown an ability to balance many materials and textures, as well as play on the proportions of the rooms using soft elements within these spaces. The seamless transition between interior insertions and furniture elements is delightful. The design creates a grand and vibrant home yet maintains a casual sense of family life.

Design statement

This grand 1880s terrace house called for a decorative approach to enhance the true beauty of the spaces that were created and revealed during renovations. The brief was to create an uplifting home filled with colour, layered with richness and detail, anchored in the past but inherently contemporary. The decoration concept required an intensely detailed curatorial process that celebrated the grandiose architecture, harmonized the clients’ varying aesthetic and developed a collection of spaces that were eclectic yet cohesive; balanced yet unexpected. The success of this project relied on the design team’s ability to marry a modern family life lived within old walls, with a timeless style executed in a contemporary fashion.

The Residential Decoration award is supported by Smeg. The Australian Interior Design Awards are presented by the Design Institute of Australia, DesignEX and Artichoke magazine. For more images of this project, see the Australian Interior Design Awards gallery.
