Jury citation
An exceptional leader and organizer, Barnaby Hartford-Davis of RMIT is a deserving recipient of the 2015 Student Prize for the Advancement of Architecture. The jury was most impressed with Hartford-Davis’s commitment to students through his involvement with SONA, playing a large part in advocacy and fostering relationships between students and professionals.
During his time studying at UNSW and RMIT, Hartford-Davis has held a number of student representative roles and national committee positions in which he has been a valuable asset to students and the architecture profession. It was his contribution above and beyond the expectations of these roles that the jury found most impressive.
In 2011, Hartford-Davis co-founded the One:One design-build event in Sydney, an opportunity for students and professionals to collaborate, build relationships and form a creative discourse. The event has become a staple of the SONA calendar and has spread nationally, with nearly every state participating in 2014. The connections created during the events, the opportunities provided and the interaction between students, professionals and the general public is highly commendable.
Over the course of 2013 and 2014, Hartford-Davis also played a major role in advocating for the student body in addressing unpaid internships and highlighting students’ rights at work. This led to his assisting the 2014 SONA President to develop a nationwide survey, which is currently in circulation.
The jury congratulates Hartford-Davis on winning this award and looks forward to his ongoing leadership in and commitment to the industry. These qualities will be assets to the profession for many years to come.
