The Planning Institute of Australia’s 2016 National Awards for Planning Excellence have been announced in Queensland.
Fifteen awards were presented across 13 different categories in recognition of the quality of planning initiatives nominated, with the host state winning four awards and three commendations.
The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment’s SEPP 65 and the Apartment Design Guide was the recipient of the Best Planning Ideas Award – Large Project. The policy, which seeks to establish a consistent approach to the design and assessment of apartment design, was legislated as planning law in 2002 and updated in June 2015.
The Plan to Place Award, which recognizes the implementation of a plan into a successful place, was presented to Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark in Brisbane by Cardno HRP, Brisbane City Council, Aveo and Cox Rayner Architects.
The Planning Champion Award, which is awarded to a non-planner who is promoting good planning or the planning profession to the public, went to Melbourne’s lord mayor Robert Doyle.
National president of the Planning Institute of Australia, Brendan Nelson, said the national judging panel was impressed by the number and quality of nominations this year, and how representative they were of the planning industry.
“This year’s nominations highlight the innovative and resourceful side of planners. The clear emphasis on the very topical urban infill development, remediation and place making is interspersed by inspired software tools and valuable guidelines,” Nelson said.
“Planners are more involved than ever with the communities they live in and help shape. This year’s nominations reflect the important role planners play in not only creating, but transforming and renewing existing spaces to fulfill changing and evolving needs while continually growing with and meeting the needs of the community.”
The annual PIA National Awards for Planning Excellence start at state and territory level with winners from each going on to be judged at the national level.
