A new face for Seidler’s MLC Centre

The owners of the iconic Harry Seidler-designed MLC Centre in Sydney unveiled plans for a new four-level podium addition to the building’s forecourt.

The podium, designed by Harry Seidler & Associates and Woods Bagot, will include a new lobby and “glass drum” entrance to the commercial tower as well as 6,000 square metres of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars along the Castlereagh and King street edges. It also activates the laneways to the west of the tower and provides additional public seating in the north-facing plaza area adjacent Martin Place.

The sixty-seven storey tower, built in 1977, was for a time the tallest concrete office building outside of North America. The octagonal footprint of the building occupied only 20% of the site with the remaining area given over to the plaza and outdoor spaces. The new design, which plays on the geometry of the existing forms around the base of the tower, will activate 80% of the site.

The MLC Centre is co-owned by GPT Group and QIC. The $150 million proposal, currently under Development Application, is part of an ongoing project to revitalise the building, including $330 million in refurbishment works for the tower and food court.
