The Barwon Coast Committee for Management and the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club are seeking submissions from architects and design teams for the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Beach complex.
The existing complex, a timber-frame building with a complex, curved roof form, was built in 1995 on the main beach at Ocean Grove on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. It comprises the surf lifesaving club, the Dunes cafe and public toilets. While the redevelopment does not necessarily entail the demolition of the existing building, the brief states: “The fabric of the existing building both internally and externally requires significant upgrade works due to the harsh climatic conditions, together with internal deterioration due to heavy use over the years.”
Gary McPike, general manager of the Barwon Coast Committee for Management said the restaurant could remain but described the current layout of the club house as “problematic” due to the mezzanine.
The $5–5.8 million redevelopment will also need to address key deficiencies of the current facilities – including a lack of toilet and storage facilities, lack of disabled accessible spaces, and a lack of vehicular and pedestrian separation – as well as a capacity to cater for the club’s growing membership base.
The two-stage tender includes an initial expression of interest process. An evaluation panel, which will include a representative of the Office of the Victorian Government Architect, will select three to five teams to participate in the request for proposals stage.
Expressions of interest close at 2pm on Wednesday 20 July 2016. The redeveloped complex is expected to be complete by May 2017. To view the tender, click here.
