The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) quarterly labour force data shows jobs in architectural services are a leading driver of new employment, according to analysis by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
With 19,800 jobs in architectural services created in the past year, the sector topped the nation, narrowly pipping the market research and statistical services sector, which had 19,000 jobs created.
Recruitment agency Hays reports “a busy residential construction market as well as large urban regeneration projects and retail, aged care and healthcare developments have created demand for architects and design engineers in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Queensland.”
It also found design architects, project architects with BIM and Revit skills, Revit drafters, senior architects, town planners and interior designers with Revit skills were in demand in the July to September 2016 quarter.
Architects and drafters with retail experience are also in high demand for international retail projects, according to Hays.
Despite growth in the number of jobs, architects’ salaries have experienced a little growth. Earlier this year, the Association of Consulting Architects 2016 National Salary Survey found “the majority (56 percent) [of respondents] had increased salaries by the CPI or less than three percent [from 2015].”
