The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design recently announced the winners of the 2011 International Architecture Awards.
Of the ninety awards, ten went to Australian firms.
The International Architecture Awards honour the best new buildings, as well as landscape and planning projects, designed and/or built around the world.
This year’s program honoured new projects (2008–2011) in the corporate, institutional, commercial, residential, interiors and urban planning categories; this included both built and unbuilt projects.
Four of Hassell’s projects received awards in the Buildings category – the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, a $2.35 billion expansion to Sydney’s metropolitan train network; Harbin Taiping International Airport in China; Swinburne Advanced Manufacturing Centre in Melbourne; and the entrance precinct to Adelaide Zoo.
McBride Charles Ryan also took out two awards in the Buildings category, for Fitzroy High School in inner Melbourne and the Letterbox House in Blairgowrie on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.
Ian Moore Architects received a Building award for its Strelein Warehouse, a conversion of a nineteenth-century former grocery warehouse in Surry Hills, Sydney.
Edward Szewczyk Architects’ Big Rock Jetty on the Upper Kangaroo River in NSW, McGregor Coxall’s Ballast Point Park in Sydney and Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp’s Surry Hills Library and Community Centre also received awards.
