The twenty-first WA Forum by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) will be held on Sunday 26 May at the University Club of Western Australia. The forum will focus on how different design disciplines influence a city’s social and community representation, its citizens sense of self, and how a city’s design affects its perception to those outside it.
Recognizing that design affects every urban encounter from the big-picture idea of the planned city skyline to those tiny, fleeting yet unforgettable moments, the DIA 2013 Forum invites reflection on the design of Perth – initially built as the capital city of a resources-rich mining state, now beginning to re-assert itself through intimate bars, live music, brilliant chefs and youth culture. In short, a work in progress. The forum is a chance to look at it afresh in the broader, global context, inviting speakers and participants to reflect and debate how these topics manifest in Perth’s ongoing cultural evolution.
Speakers include:
Scott Ludlam, WA Greens Senator and current parliament spokesperson for communications, housing, heritage, nuclear issues, infrastructure and sustainable cities. Ludlam is a campaigner for affordable rental homes and light rail in Perth. He helped to secure $60 million for heritage conservation and $40 million for cycling infrastructure, and initiated Australia’s first national inquiry into public transport.
Martin Mileham, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Perth, has worked in the public and private construction and development industries internationally, as well as locally in Perth and Melbourne, and was involved with overseeing the construction of the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Sarah Scaife and Cale Mason from the creative house Homme, and its bi-monthly online publication for fashion, lifestyle, social issues and the arts. Scaife and Mason also work on advertising campaigns, art installations, film, identity and branding, writing and concepts, and other creative projects, developing visual vocabularies across different media.
Khoa Do is the resident academic at Hassell Perth, with the unusual job description of ‘provocateur’ – a platform for him to champion critical thinking within the studio. He taught at Curtin University for over ten years (where he chaired the Design Communication stream) and has received the National Teaching Excellence Award in 2011 for his contribution and commitment to architectural education.
Valentina Audrito is an Italian-born designer now living in Bali from where she started her practice, Word of Mouth, a multidisciplinary studio involved in architecture, interiors, fashion, retail, cafe and events projects. Audrito’s work has been published in interiors magazines worldwide and her furniture has been exhibited at Salone del Mobile in Milan and the Slick Contemporary Art Fair in Paris.
Bernard Seeber’s architectural practice is based on a philosophy of “appropriateness,” a discipline that ensures efficiency in the making process and the outcomes. The practice has been recognized by industry awards and received the Australian Institute of Architecture’s George Temple Poole Award for Architectural Excellence in 1997 and 2012.
Colin Walker, director of WA Department of Culture and the Arts, Cultural Development and Strategic Programs, oversees the state’s urban planning and Australia’s longest running public art program. He has just published Building Creative Environments, an online guide for planning arts and cultural buildings in Western Australia. He is currently developing an app to survey the public about how they are impacted by the quality of arts using a range of criteria including risk, originality, authenticity and innovation.
Dr Beth George is an assistant professor in architecture at the University of Western Australia with a focus on urbanism and drawing. She is a director of Post-Architecture and co-founder of Spacemarket, a not-for-profit online service that matches vacant spaces with potential tenancies.
Tickets must be booked in advance and please arrive at 8.30 am for a 9.00 am start. Tickets purchased by Tuesday April 30 go in the draw for the Early Bird Prize of a $250 restaurant voucher.
