Urbanist and landscape architect professor Elizabeth Mossop has been appointed the new dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

Mossop is a founding principal of the landscape architecture practice Spackman Mossop Michaels, which is based in Sydney and New Orleans. She is also the former director of the Robert Reich School of Landsape Architecture at Louisiana State University and the director of the Masters of Landscape Architecture program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

“I am passionate about the power of design and its role in society and looking forward to the opportunity to work in a city with a strong design culture and sophisticated environmental values,” Mossop said.

UTS vice-chancellor Attila Brungs praised Mossop’s collaboration with other disciplines including engineering, technology and health.

“Her teaching and research in urban landscape design and multi-functional infrastructure have a strong sustainability focus. This focus strengthens UTS’s significant capacity in this area,” he said.

Mossop will begin her position in mid-2016, taking over from professor Desley Luscombe.
