The Greater Shepparton City Council has revealed the designs of the shortlisted entries in its nation-wide competition to design a $34.5 million new gallery for the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM).
The new art gallery will be situated adjacent to Victoria Park Lake and the Goulburn Valley Highway in Shepparton, approximately 190 kilometres north of Melbourne. It will replace the existing art gallery in Welsford Street.
In October 2016, a seven-member jury, made up of professionals from the arts, architecture/design, academia, Indigenous architecture and related industries, selected five practices from 88 entrants to develop their designs for stage two of the competition.
The shortlisted practices are:
- Denton Corker Marshall
- John Wardle Architects
- Kerstin Thompson Architects
- Lyons
- MvS Architects
The council is currently seeking public feedback on the finalists’ designs until 5 February 2017.
“We are really pleased to see such unique and interesting design concepts being developed for the competition,” said Kaye Thomson, director community of the Greater Shepparton City Council. “Each one is different and a stand out in their own right. All of them are sympathetic to the surrounding environment of the Victoria Park Lake and will provide a significant entry point to the southern end of the CBD.”
Each shortlisted practice was paid a $7,000 honorarium to develop their initial concepts. The winning practice will receive a $10,000 prize and be appointed to work with the Greater Shepparton City Council and SAM stakeholders to create detail designs for the project.
The $34.5-million project is funded by local, state and federal governments, each of which has committed $10 million. The remaining $4.5 million is being contributed by the SAM Foundation.
