GBCA’s Tanya Cox joins World Green Building Council board

The Green Building Council of Australia’s chair Tanya Cox has been appointed to the board of the World Green Building Council (WGBC).

The WGBC is a global umbrella organization that supports more than 75 green building councils throughout the world.

Cox comes to the role with more than 20 years’ experience as an executive and non-executive director on a range of boards, and was also the chief operating officer of Dexus Property Group, worth $17.6 billion, for more than a decade.

WGBC CEO Terri Wills said Cox was driving an ambitious strategy as chair of the GBCA. “Her commitment, expertise and strong leadership, which has contributed toAustralia’s status as a world leader in green building, has been recognized with this appointment to our Board of Directors,” Wills said.

Australia’s property industry has been named the “global green leader” for five years in a row according to the annual Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark, and more than 1,070 Australian building projects have achieved Green Star ratings. Thirty percent of the country’s office space is Green Star certified.

“As momentum for change grows following the COP21 Climate Change pact, the global property and construction sector has an unrivalled opportunity to show leadership and act with purpose,” Cox said.

She added: “Our industry understands this imperative – but it needs a loud voice on the global stage to tell our story, and to bring the hundreds of thousands of individuals and companies together on the journey. I’m honoured and excited to be part of this global movement working together towards a zero carbon future.”

The WGBC’s board of directors brings together senior leaders from 15 green building councils around the world, including the United States, Germany, India, Singapore, Colombia and Jordan.
