Ideas competition: ‘landmark’ Melbourne Tattoo Academy

Architecture competition organizer Bee Breeders is seeking ideas for a tattoo academy building complex in Melbourne.

The competition calls for a tattoo school that “should have the potential to become a recognizable landmark for locals as well as a popular tourist attraction for international visitors.”

The school is required to have spaces for a workshop, a public gallery and meeting area, a conceptual cafe and a hostel accommodation facility, all housed in a complex defined by “bold and creative design.”

The hypothetical site for the tattoo school is a small reserve and a low-rise building, separated by a roadway, in North Melbourne. The triangular reserve is bound by Queensberry, Capel and Courtney Streets and measures just 458 square metres, less than half the size of a quarter-acre block. The single storey building, also triangular in plan, is currently home to a motorcycle rental agency.

Three winners will share in a total prize pool of US$6,000 with the first, second and third prizes awarded $3,000, $1,500, $500 respectively and $500 each for a student award and a green award.

The competition is open to participants as individuals or teams of up to four. The organizer states “no professional qualification is required.” Registration for the competition closes on 21 September 2016 and submissions close on 12 October. The winners and six honourable mentions will be announced on 26 October. To register, click here.

The organizer Bee Breeders (formerly HMMD) previously ran competitions for a Charlie Hebdo Portable Pavilion, a Cannabis Bank and a Himalayan Mountain Hut, which was conducted in cooperation with the Samarth - Nepal Market Development Programme.
