MADE by the Opera House internship

Applications are open for the a new student internship: MADE by the Opera House (Multidisciplinary Australian Danish Exchange). Aimed at students of architecture, engineering and design (in the built environment) at third year level or above, the program’s first intake will be announced on 25 October as part of the fortieth anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Opera House.

It’s a collaborative program driven by the Opera House to continue the cultural dialogue between Australia and Denmark through the next generation of designers. In its curriculum and reach, it will also offer multidisciplinary experience for Australian and Danish students.

How the program will work

Ten students each year will participate: five from an Australian university based in New South Wales and five from a Danish university, selected to do a six-week exchange to Denmark and Australia respectively. In 2014 the Australian students will be in Denmark from 6 January to 23 February; Danish students will travel to Australia in July/August.

The curriculum will include

  • Placement at various engineering and/or architecture firms to work in a collaborative team on a multidisciplinary project, including at Henning Larsen Architects;
  • A visit to a performing arts or cultural centre;
  • A visit to other significant works of architecture, including works by Jørn Utzon; and
  • Completion of a collaborative multidisciplinary project designed around the Utzon Design Principles.

All instruction will be in English, and a Danish MADE representative will provide ground support to the students, including opportunities to meet other students.

Eligibility

Applications are open to NSW university students who will have completed their third year of an engineering, architecture or design (of the built environment) degree by 31 December 2013. Applications opened 16 September and close on 1 October 2013. Eligible students may apply online.

The five successful Australian students will be notified in October 2013 and will be invited to the official MADE by the Opera House announcement on 25 October 2013, as part of the fortieth anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Opera House.

Each student will be given the equivalent of $6,000 to cover international airfares, accommodation and living expenses during their visit. Students will be responsible for organizing their own accommodation, although the Steering Group can assist with information and advice.
