The Melbourne Festival is inviting artists to consider architecture and the city in its 2015 Melbourne Art Trams project.
The $40,000 commission will see a fleet of trams, adorned with artworks inspired by Melbourne’s architectural landscape, rolled out across the city’s network.
Artists are invited to consider how design and architecture defines the character of the city, and translate this into a piece of vinyl wrap artwork that will be applied to the trams’ exterior. The artists are also encourage to reflect on the city’s urban planning as well as interiors.
Eight artists including at least one emerging artist (aged 25 or under) will be commissioned. The successful artists will be publicly announced 8 June and will each receive a $5,000 fee. The trams will be release across the Yarra Trams network from 21 September. An additional $5,000 is on offer for the winner of People’s Choice, which will be announced 30 November.
