The Sound of Buildings is a multimedia walking tour covering ten of Melbourne’s most architecturally significant buildings told through the voices of designers, building users and children. Now a Sound of Buildings iPhone app, developed for the recent Victorian State of Design festival, has been released.

The application uses GPS to give directions to the ten buildings and then allows users to view images and listen to interviews with designers, users and developers.

The featured locations are:

  • AAMI Park
  • Westpac Centre
  • Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre
  • National Gallery of Victoria
  • Federation Square
  • St Paul’s Cathedral
  • Council House 2
  • Monaco House
  • Royal Exhibition Building
  • Melbourne Museum

Cox Architecture Director Patrick Ness said the tour would allow people to engage with Melbourne in a new and exciting way and give people an interesting insight into the evolution of Melbourne architecture.

The app was an excellent complement to the State of Design festival and Melbourne Open House last month. It can now be downloaded from the Apple App Store or via the State of Design website.
