New Queensland Chapter president
Shane Thompson.
Shane Thompson is the new president of the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.
Thompson established his own independent studio, Shane Thompson Architects, in 2011 after a twenty-four-year stint as a principal of BVN Architecture. He has a wide range of experience working on projects in Australia and overseas, including working on the athlete’s village in London for the 2012 Olympics and the RNA Redevelopment Masterplan, Brisbane’s largest ever urban renewal project.
Thompson has been recognized with a number of awards, including a Robin Boyd Award for the Lavarack Barracks and a Sir Zelman Cowen Award commendation for the University of the Sunshine Coast Faculty of Arts building.
In 2010 he was commissioned by the Queensland Government to curate an exhibition of recent Queensland architecture and design in Shanghai. He also chaired an urban design seminar organized by the Queensland University of Technology and the HEAT program in Venice at the time of the Architecture Biennale.
Thompson is best known for his contribution to the growth of BVN and his design leadership on numerous residential, education and cultural projects. He is also well known for his public advocacy through work on a number of government, arts and environment boards, including Queensland’s Industry Advisory Board, Queensland’s Board for Urban Places, the Queensland College of Art Industry Advisory Board, the Centre for Subtropical Design and the Architecture Australia Advisory Committee.
