Stylecraft Adelaide – design by Woods Bagot

The Stylecraft experience has been brought to Adelaide, with the company’s sixth showroom opening up in the city. More than one hundred of Adelaide’s furniture-fanatical community attended the launch and browsed the latest range. The showroom is a simple space, allowing the furniture to stand out. Steering the design, Woods Bagot Adelaide has installed super-scale round fringed lights that drape from the high ceilings. Dark stone floor tiles complement the black ceiling and white walls while multi-level platforms create a stage for Stylecraft’s Australian and European contemporary pieces. The new showroom is located at 11 Waymouth Street, Adelaide.

Asia Pacific Design Library – design by Donovan Hill

Continuing its work with the Queensland State Library, Donovan Hill has unveiled its latest work, the Asia Pacific Design Library. This design library aims to become the best publicly accessible collection of design resources in the Asia Pacific region, with books, lectures, exhibitions, research support and events on contemporary thought and design analysis on offer. In the library’s lounge, a seventeen-piece light installation by the winner of the 2010 Queensland Premier’s Emerging Design Leader Award, Kent Gration, shines down on the space. Hand-crafted stools by Mariachi Design Collective provide seating for visitors while art installations create a gallery-like atmosphere.

3 Fleur’s Depot de Pain – design by Foong + Sormann

Inspired by bakery equipment and Paris’s Metro transport system, Fleur’s Depot de Pain in Melbourne is a quaint little cafe and patisserie. “We wanted a light, airy, energetic space with a machine aesthetic that does not compromise customer comfort,” says Foong + Sormann’s Jamie Sormann. The result is a space that focuses on the bread and pastries, supported by sharp materials, including marble benchtops, Paris Metro wall tiles, and stained and waxed oak furniture. The look is rounded off with exposed light bulbs on horizontal chrome rods and plenty of space to sit and enjoy, with communal tables, stools and window seating.

Artspace reception – design by DRAW

Australian art institution ArtSpace has given its reception area a revival with the help of De Manincor Russell Architecture Workshop (DRAW). Within the historic Gunnery building in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, the new look had to respect this context as well as fulfil its practical obligations. The reception area is clean and sharply detailed with timber accents. A book display unit to the right of reception provides small bursts of colour with its bright book covers. The long expanse of reception counter signals to visitors an arrival point and, for the team that works here, the operations/management zone is now distinct. The polygonal counter has an organic wood surface and makes a statement in the minimalist space.

The Dental Lounge – design by Joshua Mulders Architects

American aphorist Mason Cooley once proclaimed, “If suffering brought wisdom, the dentist’s office would be full of luminous ideas.” Well it seems, Mason, that it indeed has at the Dental Lounge. Located in Macquarie Street, Sydney, this dental surgery has been given a tranquil fitout by Joshua Mulders Architects, with the client giving the team free reign to create the direction and theme of the space. Aquarium walls form the feature internal corridor and also bring a sense of calm to what can be a nerve-racking place. This corridor also acts as the waiting room with timber slats lining the wall above the long bench-like seating.

ANZ Private – design by Hassell

Beginning the design for the new ANZ Private office on Melbourne’s Collins Street, Hassell had to create a new type of client experience. Unlike inflexible, corporate environments, ANZ Private caters to a select group of clients, providing them with a boutique, comfortable experience. As sleek as those who frequent these offices, a tinted grey glass and black ebonized timber entry desk greets guests. Two curved white glass meeting suites with panoramic views make up the client lounge, filled with comfortable designer furniture that allows for open conversations and important meetings. This is a space that means business and isn’t afraid to show it.
