The Victorian planning minister Richard Wynne has granted approval for a $1.15 billion six-tower mega proposal for Melbourne’s Southbank masterplanned by Cox Architecture. The project had been recommended for approval by the City of Melbourne before it went to the minister at the end of 2015.
The six towers range in height from 145 metres up to 226 metres, and include four retail towers, one hotel tower and a commercial tower. The project incorporates 2,610 apartments, 10,090 square metres of retail space, 894 car parking spaces and more than 1,000 bicycle spots.
The project will incorporate offices, hotel rooms, apartments, childcare facilities, a supermarket and a range of shops and restaurants.
Open space consisting of laneways, a park and a large public square will make up 36 percent of the 2.2-hectare site, and the towers will feature rooftop gardens.
The site at 93–119 Kavanagh Street is also bordered by Power and Balston Streets, and is currently used as a car park.
According to Wynne, the project was the largest he approved in 2015 and represents one of 25 inner city towers he approved over the course of the year. In total, the approved projects included almost 10,000 apartments and 2,400 hotel rooms and were worth more than $5 billion.
“This project shows how our new CBD controls are ensuring that developments provide liveable and healthy spaces and communities for people to call home,” he said.
