Swinburne University to introduce architecture program

Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology has announced plans to introduce an architecture course to its design program for the first time.

Based at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, Swinburne’s Bachelor of Design in architecture will be offered starting in 2018, with a Master’s degree planned for 2021.

The dean of Swinburne’s School of Design, Jane Burry, said “We want our graduates to be future focused, preparing them to still be working in the industry in 40 years time.”

“The big message is, architecture for the 21st century.”

Burry has background as a practising architect and academic. At the time of her appointment to Swinburne, in May of this year, she said, “As an architect by training and profession, I am delighted to be contributing to the introduction of the new architecture courses at Swinburne.”

Burry has been involved as a project architect in the technical office at the Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia Church by in Barcelona, Spain.

“My teaching and research experience has linked creative architectural design to advanced manufacturing and to creating more socially and environmentally responsive places that positively engage all the senses,” Burry said.

There are currently 18 schools of architecture in Australia accredited by the Australian Institute of Architects.

“We want our architectural graduates to reclaim lost ground and take control of a project,” said Burry. “We want our architectural graduates to be leaders.”
