The art of dwelling – Houses 85 out now

The way we inhabit our homes reflects who we are and how we live. One of the closest professional relationships an architect has is with a client whose house they design. The architect must understand their daily living patterns and personality to create spaces that both cater to and express their individuality.

Houses 85 features myriad approaches to residential design, each reflecting the particular client’s way of life. The clean, minimal lines of the South Yarra Residence by Carr Design Group create the perfect gallery-like setting to display the clients’ large art collection. In the Fig Tree Pocket House by Plazibat and Jemmott Architects, the family’s priority was to have space for outdoor activities – immediate access to the garden and the opportunity to connect with the site.

The adventurous Milk Carton House by Simon and Freda Thornton would not suit everyone. The fictitious idea “is brought to life by the people inside it,” who actively collaborated on the project, including designing the “spilt milk” landscaping in white pebbles.

Our cover is a renovation of an inner-city terrace house by Tribe Studio. This relatively small house was reconfigured with efficiency and multiplicity of purpose in mind, including clever integration of ample storage for a young family.

A revisit of Robin Boyd’s King House and Studios shows how “the art of dwelling matures and becomes richer over time,” as suggested by the accumulation of sculptures and paintings, collected objects and treasures in the course of a house’s inhabitation.

Other great projects in this issue are by Edwards Moore, Shaun Lockyer Architects, Neometro with McAllister Alcock Architects, Teeland Architects, Popov Bass Architects, Make Architecture Studio and Nic Owen Architects. We profile Riddel Architecture’s contemporary adaptations of old buildings, and Fitzpatrick + Partners’ James Fitzpatrick reflects on his first residential project. Finally, we look at a Hong Kong apartment by Affect-t, which pushes international barriers.
