Tomek Archer wins SOYA Award
Sydney designer Tomek Archer has won the inaugural SOYA365 (Spirit of Youth Award) Architecture & Interior Design award from a field of over 100 hopeful entrants, including runners-up Samson Tiew, Robert Smith and Michael Ong. He wins a trip to Barcelona in November 2012 along with $5000 cash and a one–year mentorship with Brian Zulaikha of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects.
Archer established his practice Tomahawk Studios in 2003 as a platform for applied research projects in parallel to his architectural studies. For SOYA 2012 he entered a portfolio of work including theoretical projects, furniture designs and small interior spaces utilising a combination of traditional craftsmanship and innovative digital production. What impressed Zulaikha, a judge for SOYA 2012, was his resolution of materiality and construction. “It has a real spirit to it. Tomek delves into architectural form and space with a surprising maturity.”
