The results of the Transiting Cities – Low Carbon Futures competition were announced on Friday 14 December. The competition was part of a research project by The Office of Urban Transformation Research (OUTR) at RMIT University. It invited international landscape architects, architects, urban planers and associated design disciplines to develop alternative innovative visions to help Latrobe City, in eastern Victoria, make the transition from traditional mining to a prosperous low-carbon society. The competition results are:
Winner
Reassembling Flows by the Parallax Landscape team (Kees Lokman, Yu Ding, Melissa How) of Missouri.
Runner up
Dirty to Mighty: Brown is the new Green by Daichi Yamashita of Ontario.
Honourable Mentions
Networked Ecologies: Rethinking Remediation by the Studio One team (Mona Ghandi, Carlos Sandoval, Hassan Sazmand) of Arizona.
Hydraulic Network by the Truitt Foug Architects team (William Truitt, Carolyn Foug, Marsha Bowden, Adam Wong) of Texas.
Fields of Synergy by the PUPA team (Justina Muliuolyte, Tadas Jonauskis) of Netherlands.
Student Winner
The 2nd Law by the Explorers team (Carl Hong, Farah Dakkak, Brad Clothier) of Melbourne’s RMIT University.
Student Honourable Mentions
Twin Quarries by the DMDR team (Daniela Miller, David Rohr) of the United Kingdom’s University of Edinburgh.
Entries were assessed by an international jury including: Alan Berger (MIT), Luis Callejas (Harvard), Julia Czerniak (Syracuse University), Richard Elkington (Regional Development Australia), Peter Fairbrother (RMIT), Celine Foenander (ABC Gippsland), Mitchell Joachim (NY University), Peter Latz (University of Pennsylvania), Perry Lethlean (Taylor Cullity Lethlean), Chris Reed (Harvard) and Malcolm Smith (ARUP).
Local residents are now being asked to comment on the plans.
