Royal Adelaide Hospital competition

In July 2013, the South Australian Government announced a two-stage international design competition for the Royal Adelaide Hospital site: The current Royal Adelaide Hospital will be moved in 2016. The competition will be led by the Office for Design and Architecture SA (ODASA) in partnership with Renewal SA. With competition consultants City Lab, it will involve extensive collaboration and consultation with community and stakeholders.

Immediate Past President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Shelley Penn, will lead the independent judging panel to assess the initial design concepts that will be submitted by registered architects and landscape architects from Australia and overseas. Following the design competition, a masterplan for the precinct will be developed by the South Australian Government, guided by the successful submissions.

Stage one: 18 July – 28 August 2013
Competitors anonymously submit initial design concepts, from which up to six will be shortlisted to participate in Stage ­two. Shortlisted competitors will be paid an honorarium of $100,000.

Stage two: 16 September – 8 November 2013
Shortlisted teams develop their Stage one submission, incorporating feedback from the community, stakeholders. All shortlisted teams are required to include local participation in their team composition.

The overall winner, announced at a public exhibition in early December 2013, will receive $200,000, second prize winner receives $70,000, third prize winner receives $30,000 and the People’s Choice Award winner receives $10,000.
