DADo film: Haus Tugendhat

DADo Film Society kicks off its 2014 season with with Haus Tugendhat, screening at the Robin Boyd Walsh Street Courtyard on 16 April 2014. The film documents Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat, built in Brno, Czech Republic between 1928 and 1930 for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat. Guest speaker at the screening is Paul Walker, Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Architecture Building & Planning at The University of Melbourne.

Haus Tugendhat is a building of many guises that utilized atypical construction methods and luxury materials, and represented the open-minded upper-class life design of its clients. Since the Tugendhat family was forcibly displaced in 1938, the building has been used as military quarters, various schools and a physiotherapy centre. The film documents the story of both the building and its inhabitants: from the spirit of optimism in the affluent Western Moravia between the world wars, the Nazi occupation and the post-war years, to the more recent conservation work that has saved the building from dereliction.

Haus Tugendhat: 2013, Dir. Dieter Reifarth, 116 mins, German with English subtitles. See the full program of films and speakers, subscribe to the season, or contact DADo here.
