Open House Hobart 2014

The city of Hobart will open its doors for a public sticky-beak on Saturday 22 November, 2014.

The annual program invites Tasmanians to be tourists in their own city and discover the stories and histories within the walls of the city’s buildings.

There’s a wide array of buildings to explore, from the Room 11-designed GASP, winner of a National Architecture Award two years running to the Supreme Court of Tasmania - where the court’s judges will lead guided tours of the oldest supreme court in the country.

In all, there are thirty-five buildings to explore, and AAU’s pick of the highlights include:

Omnipod by Rosevear Architects.

Omnipod by Rosevear Architects, 2013: This penthouse atop an office building on Macquarie Street literally materialised overnight. Constructed in a workshop, the entire two bedroom pod was craned into position and assembled while the city slept.

Theatre Royal by John Lee Archer, 1834–36: Australia’s oldest working theatre, opened in 1837 with a seedy dive bar underneath the stage.

Henry Jones Art Hotel, conversion by Circa Morris-Munn, 2005: This old factory was once the home of IXL jam owned by Henry Jones. Now it’s a boutique hotel with over 500 pieces of contemporary Tasmania art.

Porter Hill House by Esmond Dorney, 1978: The distinctive petal like roof of this house has made it a contemporary icon of Tasmania architecture. Located at an abandoned fort on Porter Hill, it has panoramic views of Derwent river and the Southern Ocean.
