The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning presents the Urban Civic Projects guest lecture by Carmen Fiol and Andreu Arriola, both architects, landscape architects, urban designers and directors of Arriola & Fiol Arquitectes, Barcelona.
Fiol and Arriola have designed and created some of the most memorable contemporary public spaces in Barcelona, varying in scale from sensitive restorations and excavations in the areas of unique historic significance, to projects of a vast scale at the edge of the city, requiring a substantial infrastructural redevelopment as well as architectural and landscape intervention.
The Urban Civic Projects lecture addresses a new theoretical and practical approach that intrinsically combines architecture with urban and landscape design. It foresees the transformation of urban sites into civic outdoor rooms, establishing a new project for urban regeneration, founded on the principles of design excellence, social well-being andenvironmental responsibility within a viable economic and legislative framework.
Coupled with this intrinsic understanding of a place, is the need for the development of flexible building typologies that have the potential to adapt and morph over time, responding to the changingneeds of the population and the people who use the space.
