For the third talk in the Urban Impact series, curated by Sydney architect Sam Crawford, Perth-based husband-and-wife architects Kieran Wong and Emma Williamson of CODA Studio will talk about their work at Tusculum.

An event of the Australian Institute of Architect NSW Chapter, Urban Impact invites interstate and overseas architects to talk about the work from their practice that has impacted the city beyond the scope of its initial brief, and discuss projects by other architects in their city that inspire them.

The multi-awarded studio received two awards at the recent 2013 WA Architecture Awards: for MG/GT Administration Building (Commercial Architecture Award) and Building for Diversity (Multiple Housing Commendation).

CODA Studio became a studio to watch in the late 90s as a collective of artists and designers in Perth whose early work involved graphics, public art and architecture produced in collaboration. Their work favours the subtractive solid, their process “mass form plied by conversation” says Kieran Wong. “We have, because we’re married, a lot of time to talk to each other… all of the time! We work a lot with physical models, and the model then starts to respond to that pushing and pulling of the discussion.”

In recent years, the studio has moved away from residential projects and into the realms of urban infrastructure and housing, and two of their urban projects are currently under construction side by side in Perth on Newcastle Street in Northbridge: Foundation Housing (a competition win) and the new Women’s Health Services building.
