The inaugural Houses Awards, presented at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne in July 2011, included seventy-one finalists over seven categories – New House under 200m²; New House over 200m²; House Alteration and Additions under 200m²; House Alteration and Additions over 200m²; Apartment, Unit or Townhouse; Outdoor and Sustainability. The projects were judged by a well respected jury made up of Camilla Block of Durbach Block Jaggers; Paul Owen of Owen & Vokes; Kerry Phelan of Kerry Phelan Design Office; the national president of the Australian Institute of Architects and director of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Brian Zulaikha; Cameron Bruhn of Architecture Media and Scott Drake of the University of Melbourne.
