The 2013 Far North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards from the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland Chapter were announced on Friday, 24 May, at Pullman Reef Casino, Cairns. Building of the Year went to the Cairns Foreshore Development – a fusion of playground, sculpture, outdoor shelters and amenities, that reuse the existing hardwood timber from the site, while House of the Year went to Glass House – a sampling of the modernist ideals of Phillip Johnson’s icon, reworked into a living space for the tropics. All winning projects will now progress to the Queensland Architecture Awards, to be announced in Brisbane on 21 June.
On the jury were: Dr Shaneen Fantin (People Oriented Design), Andrew Lane (Indij Architectural & Interior Design), Kier Shorey (ABC Far North Queensland), Mark Damant (Woods Bagot), Liam Proberts (bureau^proberts), Eloise Atkinson (Deicke Richards Architects) and Paul Curran (PUSH Architects).
