Allan Rodger.

In recognition of over forty years’ contribution at a local, national and global scale to research, community understanding and architectural education in the field of sustainability, Professor Emeritus Allan Rodger is awarded the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2015 Leadership in Sustainability Prize.

Since the early 1970s, Allan Rodger has been developing and delivering education programs for building for a sustainable future. As a result, generations of architects are now advocacy leaders and practitioners in the field of sustainable design.

In 1990, Professor Rodger prepared a submission to the International Union of Architects (UIA) General Assembly in Montreal. His proposal was to establish a UIA working group on “The Implications of the Greenhouse Effect for Architecture and the Built Environment.” This was endorsed and Rodger was appointed as the inaugural convenor, a position that saw him represent the global profession at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In 1993, at the conclusion of his term as convenor, the UIA adopted the Chicago Declaration of Interdependence for a Sustainable Future, which continues to be the guiding document for sustainability principles for the UIA and its member institutions around the world – including the Australian Institute of Architects. As recently as 2014 in Durban, the Chicago Declaration was a reference point for the reaffirmation of UIA members’ commitment to action in the field of sustainability.

Professor Rodger has continued to work with the UIA to develop and advance sustainability policy and programs. On an international stage, he helped establish the UN International Conference on the Sustainability of Cities, which led to “The Melbourne Principles for Sustainable Cities.”

Professor Rodger was a pioneer in the propagation of sustainability principles for the built environment, and he has continued to advocate and educate through conference presentations, teaching and practice.
