Speakers from across Asia-Pacific converge for 2018 Landscape Australia Conference

A diverse group of speakers from Asia and Australia will come together this May to explore the opportunities of the “Asian Century.”

The 2018 Landscape Australia conference, to be held on 5 May in Sydney, will present six design practices from across the Asia-Pacific that are creatively and optimistically tackling the complex challenges of the twenty-first century through landscape architecture, horticulture, garden design, architecture and urbanism.

Among them will be John Lin, co-founder of research and design studio Rural Urban Framework (Hong Kong); Architecture BRIO principals Shefali Balwani and Robert Verrijt (India); and Yossapon Boonsom and Prapan Napawongdee, directors at Shma (Thailand).

The conference comes after the 2016 Australian Census revealed that, for the first time since colonization, migration to Australia from Asia has surpassed that from Europe. Australia’s fortunes are tied symbiotically to the region’s, and being able to fluently and meaningfully engage with Asian cultures has never been more important.

The one-day Landscape Australia Conference will explore the opportunities and pitfalls of practising internationally. It will question what Australian and Asian practitioners can learn from their regional counterparts who are facing similar challenges, and underline the importance of understanding cultural differences.

The speakers will bring a diverse set of backgrounds and perspectives to the conversation, spanning landscape architecture, horticulture, garden design, architecture and urbanism.

Each session will include a moderated panel discussion geared toward identifying tools and methods for Australian practitioners, researchers and students.

The event will be held at the Frank Gehry-designed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at the University of Technology Sydney, with morning and lunch breaks on the Goods Line, a multi-award-winning linear park designed by Aspect Studios and CHROFI.

This event is presented by Landscape Architecture Australia magazine and LandscapeAustralia.com, and organized by Architecture Media.
