The New South Wales chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects announced the winners of the NSW Architecture Awards on Friday 1 July.
The redevelopment of Walsh Bay Arts Precinct by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer has taken out the state’s top award, receiving the NSW Architecture Medallion for its creative transformation of the historic finger wharves into a foreshore cultural hotspot.
“Walsh Bay Arts Precinct has created a wealth of arts and cultural spaces from a much-love piece of public infrastructure,” the jury said. “The triple-glazed theatre walls afford spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge whilst achieving the acoustic standards for a chamber orchestra performance, just one example of the technical feats achieved.”
The project was also was also recognised with the Greenaway Award for heritage, an award for public architecture, and a further award for interior architecture.
Elsewhere in the awards, the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture was went to Kerstin Thompson Architect’s Bundanon - a museum within the existing estate of artist Arthur Boyd. “Transformational of this place and our experience of it, Bundanon provides an engaging, considered and joyful experience of landscape,” the jury observed.
The jury said this year’s winners exhibited a great capacity for innovation and forward thinking, celebrating aspects such as landscape, regeneration and sustainability.
The NSW winners will now progress to compete in the National Architecture Awards program, to be announced on 3 November.
