Aspect Studios wins UTS design competition

Aspect Studios has won an open design competition held by the University of Technology, Sydney, for its Alumni Green, the most significant outdoor space on the university’s city campus.

The design is inspired by some of the world’s great public spaces and creates a central meeting place for the university community. The vibrant, student-focused Alumni Green will have three distinct zones: the Green – a large, raised turf platform with the landscaped edges that provide informal seating areas; the Heart – a long, paved open space for ceremonial gatherings; and the Garden – a mini oasis of trees and plants that shade a series of connected student pods. Each pod caters for a different activity, containing power outlets, barbecues and table tennis tables.

The design competition received fourteen entries, with three runners-up identified. The competition jury praised Aspect Studios’ entry for the “rich range of experiences,” flexibility and innovation that it offered.

Consultation with students and other UTS stakeholders, as well as feasibility studies, will be undertaken.

The revitalized Alumni Green will re-open in 2014.
