The contribution of women architects, town planners and landscape architects will be a focus of 2012’s Women’s History Month, which is celebrated in Australia in March each year.

The Australian Women’s History Forum chose the theme Women with a Plan: Architects, town planners and landscape architects in Australian history to highlight the “outstanding” contributions by women to the history of Australian architecture.

This theme will be explored through a number of events across the country organized by various associations, universities, museums and galleries.

“Careers have not always been easy for women in architecture and town planning,” says Pamela Harris, convenor of the Australian Women’s History Forum. “In spite of this, many remarkable women studied architecture and designed public and commercial buildings and domestic dwellings. They have also been strongly involved in town planning, and through their efforts brought important social change to Australian society. We celebrate their achievements with this theme.”

The Australian Women’s History Forum, led by a group of Canberra women, aims to enhance the understanding of the role of women in the history of Australia.

Details of events will be available closer to March 2012.
