Australia’s first Passive House certified community centre opens

Moreland City Council has opened a new $30.1 million community centre in Melbourne’s north.

The Glenroy Community Centre designed by Designinc is intended to be a “one-stop-shop” for residents of the area to access a range of council and community services.

“You can borrow a library book, drop your child at childcare, access healthcare and more — all in one beautifully designed, zero energy building,” said Moreland mayor Mark Riley.

Glenroy Community Centre houses a library, customer service centre, children’s centre, as well as creative maker space, digital recording studio, sound proof jam room, youth zone with a lounge, games pod, study spaces, and a public garden.

It is the first building of its type to be Passive House certified. It has also been designed to meet Living Building Challenge stands.

The building occupies a site previously home to the Glenroy Primary School. The red brick former school building has been incorporated into the design for the new centre.

The building generates 20 percent more energy than it consumes.

“We are really proud of our collaboration with DesignInc and Building Engineering to lead the way in environmental design standards for public buildings in Australia,” Riley said. “The Glenroy Community Hub is designed for today and for future generations to come.”
