Restoration project to put new shine on Bondi boot factory

A historic boot factory in Sydney’s Bondi Junction is set to be transformed into a civic innovation hub, designed by Archer Office.

Waverley Council has appointed Lloyd Group as head contractor for the restoration and adaptation project, which is expected to be completed in March 2022.

The project includes the creation of a large skylight, an interior fitout and new floors, as well as restorations to the roof and masonry perimeter walls. Matt Devine and Co is the heritage consultant for the project.

A series of flexible community spaces will encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas, supporting partnerships with industry, universities, businesses, government and community.

Located at the rear of the Norman Lee Place, adjacent to the existing Mill Hill Community Centre, the project will also see the courtyard transformed into a recreation space with seating and tables, with Aspect Studios leading the landscape design.

Mill Hill Community Centre will also be renovated and bridge connections between the two buildings will be created at each level.

The historic boot factory building was constructed 1892 and the factory closed in 1969. Waverley Council acquired the building in 1984 and restored it in 1986. It is state heritage listed as one of the last remaining examples of Victorian industrial architecture in Waverley.

The site has been vacant since 2007. In 2018, Archer Office was engaged as head consultant for the transformation.

“Our restoration and upgrade project, which showcases our commitment to repurposing old buildings, will breathe new life into this important precinct in Bondi Junction and bring this heritage building into the 21st century to be used by generations to come,” said Waverley mayor Paula Masselos.
