Brisbane City Council has finalized its design for the $67 million Breakfast Creek pedestrian and cycle bridge that will link Newstead to Albion in the city’s inner-east and connect to an extended Lores Bonney Riverwalk.
The 80-metre arch bridge design, now submitted for development approval, was prepared by Cox Architecture and Lat 27 with engineering firm SMEC.
“The colouring has been chosen to reflect the area’s Moreton Bay Fig Trees and the Newstead Park landing point, mindfully designed to integrate with the park’s heritage feel,” Brisbane mayor Adrian Schrinner told media.
“This attractive bridge design will be enhanced with LED lighting, rest stops and a direct connection to the Lores Bonney Riverwalk.”

Council chose the skewed alignment of the bridge – from the northwest corner of Newstead Park to Kingsford Smith Drive and Cameron Rocks Reserve – to minimize impacts on key heritage places including Newstead House and Newstead Park, provide accessible access and allow vessels to get through to Breakfast Creek.
The bridge will feature dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, and will open onto a new bridge landing at Newstead Park, with landscape and urban design features to integrate with heritage and landscape setting.
Three firms are competing for the construction tender, Fulton Hogan, Georgiou Brady Joint Venture and JF Hull. Procurement is expected to be finalized by the end of 2021, and construction is scheduled for completion in 2023.
Brisbane City Council is building four car-free bridges across the Brisbane river. It revealed the final design team for the 460-metre, $190 million Kangaroo Point bridge, which will include Blight Rayner and Aspect Studios, in late June and planning is underway for two more bridges from Toowong to West End and St Lucia to West End.
