Build-to-rent development proposed for suburban Melbourne

A $250-million mixed-use development, designed by I2C Architects with international practice Ryder Architecture, has been proposed for Oakleigh South in the Melbourne municipality of Monash.

To be known as Fieldworks House, the development will the first build-to-rent project in the Cikty of Monash, comprising 171 apartments, with 12 ground-floor retail spaces, a dedicated co-working space and a private health and wellness rooftop retreat.

I2C Architects residential lead Marcus Greening said the goal of the build-to-rent project is to create a “vertical neighbourhood” that enhances social experiences for its residence and the wider community.

“The past 18 months we’ve seen an increase in people who are choosing a more flexible work/lifestyle balance and opting to spend more time within their local neighbourhood,” said Greening. “This change in lifestyle has called for a fresh consideration in mixed-use and multi-residential apartment design.

“Flexible co-working spaces are balanced with high quality indoor and outdoor recreational facilities providing residents a choice in how they live, work and play in their community.”

The development will feature 12 ground-floor retail outlets.

The development will feature an exposed brick facade, inspired by Oakleigh South’s legacy as a quarry site in the 1940s. Developer Pellicano added that the neighbourhood – located on the border of three municipalities – has a “strong sense of culture and place”, and the architectural response would incorporate this as much as possible. The development will also incorporate locally inspired artwork on the building exterior.
