The winners of the Canberra Lightrail ideas competition were announced at the 2014 ACT Architecture Awards on 14 June.
The competition was launched in December 2013 seeking ideas for a railway station at Dickson, an architectural presentation of a transit hub which responds to Canberra’s natural landscape and integrates into the local community.
Urban Line by Ann Cleary (University of Canberra) and Cassandra Cutler (Total Project Group) was award first prize. Designed for a walkable city, the proposal connects existing parks and green spaces along Northbourne Avenue, linking them with cultural hubs via the light rail. As part of their prize, the pair were given a trip to the 2014 Venice Biennale.
Second prize was awarded to Layered by architecture graduates Sarah Herbert and Kate Shepherd. Their scheme proposes to strip back existing commercial building stock layering them with new youthful business ventures, housed in shipping containers and prefab elements.
Crossroads by Nugroho Utomo and Gerard O’Connell won third prize and fourth prize was added to Can Ercan.
On the jury were: John McInerney (former manager of Planning at City of Sydney and City of Melbourne), Iain Maxwell (director of Supermanoeuvre), Pamile Berg (public art consultant and former director of Mitchell Giurgola & Thorp).
A selection of the twenty-one winning entries will be exhibited at the National Museum of Democracy in Provisional Parliament House later in 2014.
