Sydney councillors have given the green light to a pair of buildings in the Green Square development area designed by Candalepas Associates.
The two buildings at 12-22 Rothschild Avenue, Rosebery, eight and nine storeys respectively, will house 176 apartments, one retail tenancy and two levels of basement parking.
An open courtyard will sit between the buildings, while deep setbacks provide opportunities for further public space.
Candalepas Associates won a design competition for the $60 million project in 2019. The firm’s design calls for “highly modulated” facades, including integrated public art along the northern building facades inspired by caryatids and columns identified in industrial buildings adjacent to the site.
Council planners praised the design for considering and responding to the heritage context.
The eight-storey, 90-apartment building fronting Mentmore Avenue includes two communal outdoor seating areas and a communal music room on the ground level as well as further communal spaces on the top level facing east. It’s topped by an “architectural roof feature” containing skylights for additional light and air to the upper-level apartments.
The second building, set back seven metres from Rothschild Avenue, is nine-storeys in height and includes a ground floor retail tenancy along with 86 apartments and communal open space throughout the building.
There will also be space for outdoor dining in front of the ground floor retail tenancy and access to the communal courtyard. Councillors unanimously approved of the development, noting that it “includes the delivery of public art, dedication and embellishment of land, the creation of two new through site links, and a monetary contribution to Green Square urban renewal area.”
