Cox Architecture lead architect for new SCG stand

Cox Architecture will carry out architectural design services for the development of the Sydney Cricket Ground’s (SCG) new Northern Stand.

The new stand, which will include a roof terrace, will replace the Noble, Bradman and Messenger stands and provide much-needed facilities and amenities to the cricket ground. It will also provide greater seating capacity and better views by having no columns in the seating area.

Spectators will enter through a grand arrival atrium and then ascend to the upper level via escalators, while maintaining a view of the lawn area. The upper level will include the Concourse Bar, a function space for seven hundred people, a sports bar and corporate and media areas.

The design of the new pavilion includes the retention of the Clock Tower facade of the existing Noble Stand, and the new main entry will align with the existing historic pavilions and the Walk of Honour.

Cox Architecture’s design proposal for the Northern Stand envisages a pavilion that complements the SCG’s legacy and heritage while reinforcing and rejuvenating the character of the SCG.

“The twenty-first century cricket stadium is being defined by the changing shape of the game,” Cox Architecture’s sports director, Alastair Richardson, said.

“The Northern Stand redevelopment will celebrate the heritage of the Sydney Cricket Ground while showcasing the next evolution of stadia design and leading cricket’s future.”

The Northern Stand is the first project in a masterplan that is being developed by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, and is the second stage of the SCG redevelopment, following the construction of the Victor Trumper Stand in 2008.

The project is due to be completed in time for the Ashes Tour in 2014, with redevelopment of the Brewongle, Churchill and O’Reilly stands to follow.
