Darling Harbour redevelopment to kick off

The NSW government has reached an agreement with property group Mirvac to redevelop the Habourside Shopping Centre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour into a retail, residential, commercial and entertainment precinct.

The project is expected to create a hectare of public open space, including a new 3,500-square-metre park and a wider waterfront promenade.

Snøhetta and Hassell won an international design competition for the project in January 2022.

The jury selected the design from six entrants for its celebration of open space and natural vegetation, including Guardian Square at the centre of the development, which is envisioned as a neighbourhood park and community meeting place.

The proposed centre will house 24,000 square metres of office space, 7,000 square metres of retail and 350 apartments.

NSW cities minister Rob Stokes said theproject will complement the government’s own plans for Sydney’s waterfront.

“From Bays West to Circular Quay, we’re breathing new life into Sydney’s harbour foreshore to make it greener, more accessible and more beautiful,” Stokes said.

Demolition works on the site are expected to begin in January 2023.
