Designers sought for cultural centre in southern Sydney

A council in southern Sydney is seeking expressions of interest from designers for a major refurbishment of the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

The refurbishment is intended to transform the existing 40 year-old building into a modern cultural facility that would contain a reworked, 700-seat theatre, a new foyer, and enhanced accessibility, including a new lift. The forecourt will be refreshed, and the backstage facilities improved.

A shortlist of applicants will be asked to submit design concepts. The council has set aside $21.8 million to plan, design and execute the project.

The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader reports that a council report released earlier in 2018 estimated construction would start in November 2021, and be completed in August 2023.

Carmelo Pesce, mayor of Sutherland Shire, said, “We are really excited to see what design concepts will be submitted.

“Our community love music and the arts, so we want to grow the range of opportunities to participate in and enjoy creative experiences. We want to support our local talent and bring great talent locally for the whole community to enjoy.”

“The project presents an exciting opportunity to design a venue that will evoke the vibrancy of the performing arts, engage the community and enrich the surrounding town centre.”

Pesce added that the public could expect to see design concepts in 2019.

EOI submissions can be made here.
