Dome Light by Sydney collective DesignByThem is a large-scale pared-back revision of a popular postmodern design that has seen many iterations by designers worldwide. Dome wasn’t intended as a production piece initially, explains designer Sarah Gibson: “We prototyped a few to hang above the benches in our studio. But a lot of people really liked them, so we decided to make them commercially.”
It’s a smart addition to the studio’s textured range of tables, benches and chairs known as Butter (made from of recycled plastic milk bottles), and the silken-finished timber Stem range of tables. Dome’s opaque acrylic shade, 1140 mm in diameter, brings a warm pool of light that can be used as an accent or simply ambient, depending on the scale of the space.
DesignByThem is a design-make studio producing a small collection of their own work (by directors Nick Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson) and some for other designers, such as Stefan Lie, whose award-winning Ribs bench is now part of the public furniture at the Sydney Opera House.
