2011 Dulux Study Tour Winners

Carly Barrett, Hassell

Carly Barrett, Hassell

Winner: Carly Barrett, Hassell

Carly Barrett graduated in architecture with second-class honours from the University of Western Australia. She is currently a designer at Hassell in Perth.

Barrett shows a clear commitment to and enthusiasm for architecture. She has been instrumental in exploring opportunities for emerging architects to promote architecture and to develop their skills through exhibitions and collaborative projects at a number of venues in Perth.

Barrett’s work to date is highly creative and she presented an interesting series of design projects both conceptual and realized.

Insightful comments from colleagues and employers also supported her submission and attested to her “genuine passion for design”. The jury also felt that Barrett’s submission demonstrated personality and a good sense of humour, which were considered excellent attributes for tour participants.

Christina Cho, Cox Rayner

Christina Cho, Cox Rayner

Winner: Christina Cho, Cox Rayner

Christina Cho graduated from the University of Queensland with first-class honours. She is a registered architect in Queensland.

In a glowing letter, Timothy Hill described her attitude: “It is this well-targeted effort of rounding out her area of operations to become the type of architect that the wider world might value, rather than the type of architect that the profession itself might celebrate.”

Cho states that she is working toward not just a physical construction of space, but to place importance on the human conversation and interaction needed to activate spaces. She maintains a strong commitment to community work.

Cho’s solid project experience and community involvement are of such a high standard that she has been awarded a place on the tour.

Yuri Dillon, Liquid Blu

Yuri Dillon, Liquid Blu

Winner: Yuri Dillon, Liquid Blu

Yuri Dillon graduated from the University of Queensland with honours in 2001 and is a registered architect. Dillon is dedicated to sharing his experiences and fostering the growth of young architects by providing an open environment and company culture.

As the sole director and owner of Liquid Blu, Dillon has developed the practice to be a leader in architecture, interior design and masterplanning for the private and public sector. His projects span a wide range of market segments - private residential, multiresidential, mixed-use, commercial, retail, hospitality, health, and sport and recreation developments.

Dillon is seeking to establish Liquid Blu as an international design brand known for creating inspiring environments that support and enhance the human condition.

The jury was impressed with Dillon’s commitment to good design and, through that, the promotion of architecture.

Jefa Greenaway, Greenaway Architects

Jefa Greenaway, Greenaway Architects

Winner: Jefa Greenaway, Greenaway Architects

Jefa Greenaway graduated from the University of Melbourne with honours and is the first Indigenous registered architect in Victoria.

Greenaway’s letters of support from Professor Paolo Tombesi and from his clients were very different in their context, but were a great reflection of Greenaway’s work ethic and attitude to architecture.

Greenaway has won numerous awards and distinctions of note, including the 1999 RAIA President’s Student Award. He has solid project experience and, as director of his own practice, he has begun to cement himself as a contemporary emerging architectural practice.

The jury felt that the Dulux Study Tour would provide Greenaway a huge boost in terms of his knowledge base, which would in turn enhance both his work and teaching at the University of Melbourne, for the benefit of many young students of architecture.

Brendan Murray, JPW

Brendan Murray, JPW

Winner: Brendan Murray, JPW

Brendan Murray is a registered architect in New South Wales and works as senior project architect with Johnson Pilton Walker in Sydney. Graduating from the University of Canberra in 2004, he received first-class honours, a University Medal and the RAIA ACT Chapter Medallion, along with honours in musicology from the Canberra School of Music.

Murray has practised for ten years, commencing with an undergraduate cadetship at Mitchell, Giurgola & Thorp (2001-2005) before moving to Johnson Pilton Walker in 2005.

Murray has been commended in formal study, in practice as a project architect on award-winning projects, and by his peers and employers. His achievements are supported by a varied body of built work.

The jury agreed that Murray appears to be a highly valued member of a well-regarded design practice and that he would benefit greatly from the experience gained on the tour.

Jury - Karl Fender, David Parken, Phil White, Anthony Balsamo, Mark Bray, Amelia Holliday.
