NSW Architecture Awards entries open

Entries are now open for the 2013 NSW Architecture Awards from the Australian Institute of Architects.

In opening the 2013 entries, the New South Wales Chapter of the Institute announced a few changes to the program from previous years.

The Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture will now be open to entries across all categories (instead of having a separate sustainability category) reflecting the importance of sustainable design for all projects.

The age ceiling of the Enduring Architecture Award has been lifted to allow buildings older than fifty years to be eligible.

Also reflecting current thinking, the Heritage category is now divided into two subcategories: Conservation and Creative Adaptation. Both remain eligible for both the Greenway Award for Heritage Architecture at state level and the Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage Architecture at the national level.

The Small Project Architecture Award has been elevated to a named award to honour architect Robert Raymond (Bob) Woodward AM, designer (among other projects) of Sydney’s El Alamein Fountain (right) in Fitroy Gardens, in the heart of Kings Cross.

Woodward’s career changed after winning the Institutes’ Civic Design Award in 1964 for the El Alamein Memorial Fountain in Kings Cross. “We hope naming this award after Bob continues to inspire innovation and beauty in our urban streetscapes,” said NSW Chapter President Matthew Pullinger.

On the topic of civic presence, a new Lord Mayor’s Prize for design excellence in the public domain has been added to the program. This prize will recognize creative collaborations and exciting additions to public spaces in the city and entries in all categories of the NSW awards (except Residential Architecture) are eligible.

The Adrian Ashton Award for Journalism will now be awarded annually (instead of bi-annually) and has been re-named the Adrian Ashton Prize for Writing and Criticism, encompassing all media.
