FJMT and Archimedia win 2012 NZIA Architecture Medal

The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki by Sydney-based FJMT and Auckland-based Archimedia has won the 2012 NZ Institute of Architects’ Architecture Medal.

Presented at the New Zealand Architecture Awards dinner at Te Papa, Wellington, on 25 May, the medal recognizes New Zealand’s best architecture from within any category.

The jury, consisting of New Zealand architects Hugh Tennent, Ivan Mercep, Ginny Pedlow and Gary Lawson, and Australian architect John Wardle, praised the building’s relationships with its neighbours (the key relationship being with Albert Park), use of outdoor space around the building and view to the interior, which invites the public into the gallery. They commented, “The building also has moments of necessary drama, such as the beautifully crafted canopies over the atrium and forecourt, that elevate a visit into an occasion.” On the interior, it was the well-crafted detailing, ease of navigation, high functionality and the delineated distinction between new and existing structure that caught the attention of the jury.

In conclusion, the jury noted, “The Art Gallery’s requirements have been met, and so have Aucklanders’ expectations.”
