Geyer and Matthews Architecture awarded Best in State at DIA WA awards

At its recent Western Australian awards, held on 2 September 2011, the DIA bestowed three honours on Matthews Architecture and Geyer’s interior for Perth art and design concept space Venn. The project received the Best in State award, the award for Interior Spaces – Hospitality and the Interior Spaces – Retail award.

Venn occupies a century-old flour mill at 16 Queen Street in Perth’s CBD. The project involved transorming the existing building into an art gallery, design shop, artist studios and bar/cafe. The design carefully preserves key original features, including the pressed tin ceiling, polished floorboards, a wooden staircase and steel beams, while introducing a visual connection between each space.

The DIA exposes the ever-changing landscape of Western Australian design through its annual awards program. Awards of merit and commendations are presented to projects that demonstrate the highest levels of achievement and a Best in State award is presented for the most outstanding professional project for the year. Open to all Western Australian design professionals and design students, the 2011 DIA WA Awards is the state’s only multi-disciplinary design program and celebration of design diversity and vision.
