Hassell designs $40m TAFE redevelopment in Perth’s north

The WA government has released the final designs for the $40 million redevelopment of a TAFE campus in Perth’s northern suburbs.

A new three-storey training facility designed by Hassell will replace 22 tired modular classrooms originally built in the 1970s for North Metropolitan TAFE’s Balga campus.

The new facility will be used to deliver training across building and construction, community services, general education and other uses, as well as provide enhanced student services and staff amenities.

“North Metropolitan TAFE’s Balga campus is one of the leading facilities for training apprentices in the building and construction sector, which is a priority for the state government,” education minister Sue Ellery said.

“Once completed, the modern new facilities will support the State’s construction industry by training the next generation of workers at a critical time.”

The new building is intended to serve as a one-stop shop for the local community to access professional advice and training opportunities, with the addition of the Balga Jobs and Skills Centre on the new site.

“It is a huge investment in the future of the local community, which will have first-class training facilities on its doorstep,” Minister Ellery said.

Hassell secured the contract for the redevelopment in October 2020. Construction tenders for the project are open until 12 July, and the building is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
